- Disaccharidase Determination (pdf)
Small Bowel Biopsy
Lactase, sucrase, maltase, and palatinase (in lieu of isomaltase) activities can be determined from an intestinal biopsy weighing approximately 5 mg wet weight. Upon collection, the specimen should be placed in a small, tightly capped, plastic tube. A 1.5 mL microtube works well. The tissue should not be placed on gauze or filter paper, nor should any saline, support or embedding material be added.
Keep the specimen frozen and ship on dry ice. Turn around time: Disaccharidase test results same day as delivery..
- Pancreatic Enzyme Activities (pdf)
Duodenal aspirate
Trypsin, amylase, lipase, and chymotrypsin activities can be determined from 0.5mL of duodenal fluid. The sample can be a single fluid or part of a secretin stimulation test. The pH of the fluid must be 6.5 or above at the time of collection. A lower pH suggests gastric contamination which will irreversibly destroy the enzyme activities.
The aspirate should be placed in a small, tightly capped, plastic tube. Keep sample frozen and ship on dry ice. Turn around time - results same day as delivery.
- Pancreatic Elastase in Stool (pdf)
1 Gram Random Formed Stool
Pancreatic elastase (PE) is not degraded during intestinal transit and the concentration of PE in a stool sample reflects exocrine pancreatic function. This assay allows the diagnosis or exclusion of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, which can be caused by chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic tumor, cholelithiasis or diabetes mellitus.
Pancreatic enzyme supplementation therapy should be discontinued prior to sample collection.
The sample should be kept frozen and stored at -20°C to -70°C until it can be shipped on dry ice to our facility.
Ship overnight by appropriate courier (i.e. Airborne / Fed Ex) to the address above. Samples are batched and run every Wednesday.
- Carbohydrate Malabsorption
Lactose Breath Hydrogen testing
This is a non invasive and accurate test to determine the malabsorption of carbohydrates. Breath hydrogen is proportional to the amount of ingested carbohydrate which is unabsorbed and fermented by colonic flora.
Method: Breath samples are collected following lactose ingestion. The amount of hydrogen present in the breath sample is an index of carbohydrate malabsorption and lactase deficiency. The tolerance test requires 3 hours of time. Schedule is at 8am in the morning.
Patient and specimen requirements: The test is scheduled through the JOLI office at 716-639-0443..
- Helicobacter Pylori Antibody (pdf)
Serum test for chronic active gastritis
The presence of H pylori antibody has been associated with gastric-duodenal ulcers and can be the cause of gastritis.
Send 0.5 mL serum, keep frozen and ship on dry ice. Samples are batched and run every Monday.
- Fecal Alpha-1-Antitrypsin
Stool sample for protein losing enteropathy
A random stool specimen of about 5 grams should be collected in a plastic container.
Keep sample frozen and ship on dry ice. Turn around time - 4 working days.
- Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (P-ANCA and C-ANCA)
Serum Test
ANCA can be found in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. A serum sample of 0.5 ml is required.
Keep sample frozen and ship on dry ice. Samples batched and run every Monday.
- Helicobacter Pylori Specific Antigen in Stool (pdf)
Stool Test
Non-invasive Helicobacter pylori Specific Antigen (HpSA) testing can detect an active H. pylori infection in the patient stool specimen. Other antibody tests can screen for H.pylori exposure but cannot distinguish between an active infection and a resolved episode. Testing for an active infection helps ensure the eradication of H.pylori after treatment.
A random stool sample of about 5 grams of fresh stool should be collected in a sterile plastic container. Samples should be frozen and sent to JOLI within 24 hours of collection. Samples batched and run every Monday.
- Celiac Testing (pdf)
Serum Test
Celiac Disease (gluten-sensitive enteropathy ) is an autoimmune disorder of the digestive tract. Testing requires a minimum of 1ml of serum. Tests are available in single test format or panel: EMA, EMA with titer, hu-tTg IgA, hu-tTg IgG, total IgA, and total IgG.
Serum sample should be placed in a small, tightly capped, plastic tube. Keep sample frozen and ship on dry ice. Samples are batched and run on Monday.
